Writing Lesson Plan 

 

 

Title: Writing Lesson Plan-Identifying key writing elements

 

Standards:

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.1.A

Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which related ideas are grouped to support the writer's purpose.

 

Objectives:

  • The student will be able to identify topic sentence, supporting sentences, and concluding sentences.

  • The student will be able to apply them to their own paragraph.

 

Materials:

  • Writing Samples

  • SMARTBoard activity

  • Topic sentence worksheet

 

Procedure: (30min)

Previous Knowledge: The students will have brainstormed of a topic for their essay.

Intro: (5 min)

  • The teacher will start the lesson by listing the key writing elements in a paragraph.

    • Topic Sentences- 1st complete sentence of the paragraph that expresses the main idea of paragraph and grab the readers attention

    • Supporting Sentences- complete sentences that support the main idea and add details to the paragraph

    • Concluding Sentences- complete sentences that summarize the paragraph

Procedure: (25 min.)

  • The teacher will present the SMARTBoard interactive actives.

  • The presentation will include:

    • Slide 1- matching of the definition with the 3 key element words that were introduced in the intro

    • Slide 2- Sample paragraph with the 3 key elements highlighted- the teacher will reiterate where in the paragraph the student can find the topic sentence, supporting sentences and concluding sentences

    • Slide 3- samples of sentences and the students will guess which key element

    • Slide 4- Practice writing topic sentences- The teacher will present several ways to think of a topic sentence:

      • Expresses main idea of paragraph

      • It answers the questions how, why or where

      • It can prove, explain or describe something

  • Slide 5- The teacher will model writing a paragraph using the brainstorm web from yesterday expressing her love for Paris

 

  • The students will then practice independently on creating a paragraph using a topic sentence, supporting sentences and concluding sentences.

  • The teacher will walk around and observe the students while they are working independently.

  • The students will share with their partner their paragraph and peer edit.

Conclusion:(5min)

  • The lesson will conclude by having several students volunteer to read their paragraph and identify the key elements.

 

Assessment:

1.) The students will engage with the interactive SMARTBoard presentation.

2.) The students will create a paragraph using a topic sentence, supporting sentences and concluding sentences.

3.) The teacher will provide additional assistance and take anecdotal notes while the students are writing.
