Description of Text: The Gossip Monster by Katherine Follett

The story starts with a female character named Jamie. A boy is always teasing her in her class named Del. There was a rumor going around school that Jamie crawled through garbage and Del called her Germy. Jamie was really frustrated and when she saw Del in the principal’s office, she started a rumor. Jamie told her friends that Del must have beat up the younger child that was in the principal’s office with him. Jamie’s friends spread the word and the rumor grew. The next day Del was sulking around school and no one wanted to talk to him. Jamie admitted to her teacher that she started the rumor and asked for advice. She apologized to Del and he told her the real reason he was in the principal’s office. Del’s dad got hurt and was coming home from the army and that is why his brother was crying. Jamie told her friends she was done gossiping.

Materials:

  • Multiple copies of text

  • Checklist/anecdotal notes sheet

Procedure:

 Before Reading:

  • The students will be given time to flip through the book to look at the layout.

  • The teacher will ask, “ Are there any important features of the book we should discuss before reading?”

  • The teacher will call and students and facilitate a discussion about the importance of the layout of the text.

    • Table of Contents- allows the reader to go to sections quickly without reading entire story

    • Glossary- the words in bold throughout the story have definitions in the back of the book

  • The teacher will facilitate a discussion about the title by asking:

    • “What does gossip mean?”

    • “ What is the title inferring?”

    • “What predictions can we make from the title?”

  • The teacher will set the purpose of the reading

    • “ We will all read the story quietly and then each one of you will read louder when I tap you on the shoulder. Make sure you use context clues or the glossary if you come to a word you don't know. Everyone should read closely, so you can retell the story to your partner and write a brief summary afterwards.”

During Reading:

  • The teacher will observe and take anecdotal notes while listening to one student at a time.

  • The teacher will coach the students if needed. The teacher should remind the students to look for context clues such as: prefixes, suffixes, surrounding words, and pictures.

  • The teacher should ask the students questions to prepare them for discussion after the reading such as:

    • “Have you ever heard gossip?”

    • “How did it make you feel?”

    • “How do you think Del felt the next day at school?”

    • “Should you always make assumptions?”

    • “Have you ever felt like Del?”

After Reading:

  • After the students finish reading, the teacher will facilitate a discussion.

  • The teacher will ask several questions during the discussion:

    • “What is the overall message of the story?”

    • “ Who were the main characters?”

    • “What new vocab words did you encounter?”

  • After a quick discussion, the students will turn towards a partner and tell a text-to-self connection.

  • The students will then write a brief summary of the story and their text-to-self connection.
